Minocqua, Wisc.,—June 18, 2016—Casey Gallagher and Ben Otto put together a 12-pound, 12-ounce five-bass limit to win the Cabela’s North American Bass Circuit’s 2016 season opener on northern Wisconsin’s Minocqua Chain of Lakes presented by Ranger Boats.

“We’re shocked,” exclaimed Otto, of Pulaski, Wisconsin. “We had a tough practice and went into the tourn
ament without a definite pattern. This is the best circuit in the Midwest. To come out on top against all of these great anglers is really humbling.”
“It feels great,” added Gallagher, also of Pulaski. “We ended up ‘junk fishing’ anywhere and everywhere from 30 feet to six inches of water.”
Otto and Gallagher caught a number of bass, mostly in the morning, and brought four smallmouths and one largemouth to the Cabela’s NABC scale The Beacons of Minocqua Lakefront Resort and Suites. They reported that ¾-ounce football jigs accounted for most of their bronzebacks, while ½-ounce flippin’ jigs were the ticket to largemouths.
They collected $5,575 in cash and prizes including $4,800 in first-place cash plus $200 in Cabela’s gift cards. They also claimed $575 from the NABC Big Fish Pot for catching a 4-pound, 10-ounce bass that was big fish of the event.
This weekend’s Minocqua triumph marked their second NABC win as partners, having claimed the Cabela’s NABC World Bass Championship crown in 2014. Gallagher earned a third NABC victory at the 2012 Lake Winnebago qualifier fishing with Ty Cornell.
Rounding out the top five were:
2nd: Greg and Brad Werner, 12-2, $2,300 cash plus two $100 Cabela’s gift cardsMQ2
3rd: George Liddle and Janet Parker, 11-12, $1,400 cash plus two $50 Cabela’s gift cards and $230 from the big fish pot
MQ 3
4th: Bill and Josh Gruber, 10-15, $1,050 cash plus $345 from the big fish pot
5th: Andrew and Michael Nitchals, 10-12, $800 cash
In all, the Cabela’s NABC awarded a total payout of $13,600 in cash and prizes. A total of 114 bass weighing 230 pounds, 15 ounces crossed the scale and were returned to the Minocqua Chain in the Cabela’s NABC’s catch-and-release format.
This was the first of four 2016 Cabela’s NABC regular-season qualifiers. The remaining schedule includes Lake Minnewaska, Minnesota, July 16; Lake Wissota, Wisconsin, July 30; and Mille Lacs Lake, Minnesota, August 13. The Cabela’s NABC Championship is set for October 1-2 at Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin.
Cabela’s, the World’s Foremost Outfitter for hunting, fishing and outdoor gear, is entering its sixth season as title sponsor of the NABC. Other sponsors include: Ranger Boats, Stratos Boats, Mercury Marine, Garmin, MotorGuide, G-Juice and T-H Marine.
Open to all two-person teams regardless of club or sponsor affiliation, the Cabela’s NABC is based in Ponca City, Oklahoma. Entry fees are $500 per regular season tournament and $600 for the two-day championship. The Circuit offered an overall payback of more than 100 percent in 2015 and will do so again in 2016. In addition, a small donation is included in each entry fee and matched by the NABC and other conservation organizations up to 3-to-1 in support of bass conservation projects anywhere the NABC does business.
